Snowe Calls on Small Business Administration to Strengthen Oversight of Contracting and Business Development Programs

Cites concerns with SBA's missed reporting deadlines, alarming reports of fraud and abuse

Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Ranking Member Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) today, in a letter to U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Karen Mills requested a status report of implementing recommendations to prevent fraud and abuse in several critical contracting and business development programs, in particular the Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) and HUBZone programs.?

"As you are undoubtedly aware, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the SBA Inspector General (IG) have issued a series of reports, testimonies, and studies identifying alarming concerns with the Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) and Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) programs," wrote Senator Snowe.? "In addition, I am troubled by a number of statutorily mandated reporting deadlines that the SBA has missed for the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR), Small Business Technology and Transfer (STTR), the 8(a) Business Development, and the small business contracting goal programs."
